Green Team
Formed in 2018, First United Methodist’s Green Team is focused on the future we leave our children, grandchildren, and their children. We are committed to taking whatever action is needed to ensure that future is livable. As people of faith, we are guided by a Climate Covenant that provides a call to action for our congregation, and the guiding principles for our Green Team. In addition to spearheading the campaign to install solar panels on the church, the Green Team’s activities include writing letters to local, state, and national leaders on climate change issues, leading a recycling and composting program, and educating congregation members about environmental issues.

In August, 2022 First UMC had 66 solar panels installed on the church roof. Funding for this project was provided from a Renewable Energy Grant from Northwestern Energy, the UMC Mountain Sky Conference, SBS Solar, and contributions from the congregation. These panels provide approximately 80 percent of the building's electricity.
The church’s recycling and composting program costs just $3 a month. Everyone is welcome to participate. Just send/bring a check to First UMC (Office), marked “glass recycling” and start bringing your glass and compost materials to our bins. The glass bins and a smaller compost bin are located behind the Sunshine House, in the alley next door to the church’s Education Annex. They’re accessible 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
